Our Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour from Cusco promises a unique journey into one of Peru’s lesser-known yet equally breathtaking landscapes. Unlike the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, the Palccoyo Mountain offers a quieter and more serene experience.
You will encounter stunning, vibrant colors without the crowds. This alternative Rainbow Mountain tour will let you explore an untouched side of the Andes. It will reveal the natural beauty of the Peruvian highlands in a way that feels almost like discovering a hidden gem.
We will begin this memorable tour from your hotel in Cusco, picking you up in the early morning. After a scenic drive of approximately 3 hours, we will reach the starting point. It is at an altitude of around 4,800 meters (15,748 feet) above sea level.
Along the way, our experienced tour guide will share insights into the fascinating history, geology, and culture of the area. It will give you a deep understanding of the landscapes and communities that call this region home. As we approach the Palccoyo Mountain range, you’ll catch your first glimpses of the famous multicolored slopes. They are a phenomenon created by mineral deposits over millions of years.
The Palccoyo hike is short yet spectacular, with a leisurely walk that takes about 45 minutes. Unlike the steeper hike to the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, this gentle trail offers a more relaxed experience. You’ll be able to focus on the stunning scenery and adjust more comfortably to the high altitude.
You’ll encounter a vast panorama of rolling red hills, three rainbow-colored mountains, and the majestic Ausangate Mountains in the distance. In addition to the vivid hues, we will explore the Stone Forest.
It is a surreal landscape of towering rock formations, sculpted by centuries of wind and rain. Along the way, you’ll likely spot herds of alpacas and llamas grazing peacefully. They add to the unique beauty of this hidden gem in the Andes.
We highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to experience the beauty of the Rainbow Mountain in Peru without the crowds or the more challenging hike. While Palccoyo sits at a high altitude, our tour guide will guide how to manage altitude sickness.
We will ensure you have an enjoyable and safe experience. We recommend visiting Palccoyo during the dry season to give you the best possible views. The rainy season may reduce visibility.
As we conclude this Palccoyo tour, we’ll return to Cusco, giving you time to reflect on the remarkable sights of the day. This tour is ideal for those visiting Machu Picchu or exploring other parts of the Sacred Valley, as it offers a chance to witness one of Peru’s natural wonders. Join us to explore the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain and discover an unforgettable journey through Peru’s colorful mountains.
Palccoyo is home to rainbow mountains that belong to the same mountain range as Vinicunca. Unlike Vinicunca, Palccoyo boasts up to three stunning peaks of vibrant colors. This journey provides a more accessible alternative, ideal for those seeking shorter hikes and easier trails.
The Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour begins in the early morning with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco. We’ll travel south along the Cusco-Puno road, taking in beautiful landscapes as we journey for a couple of hours to the town of Cusipata, where you’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast to start your day.
After breakfast, we continue towards Combapata and take a scenic detour along the Salka River. As we travel, you’ll be immersed in breathtaking Andean landscapes and may encounter herds of alpacas and llamas, enhancing the charm of the journey. Shortly, we’ll reach our final destination, where you’ll catch your first glimpse of the stunning Rainbow Mountains from the parking area.
Here, you’ll have a few minutes to prepare for a gentle trek to the main viewpoint. This short 30- to 40-minute hike brings you to a panoramic view of the three Rainbow Mountains of Palccoyo, the Red River, and the majestic Ausangate, Cusco’s highest and most sacred mountain (Apu). For those interested, an additional 15-minute walk leads to the stone forest, where unique rock formations create an otherworldly scene.
After spending time savoring these spectacular views, we’ll make our way back to the vehicle. In the afternoon, we’ll stop in Cusipata to enjoy a buffet lunch featuring local specialties, a delightful end to your adventure. Then, we’ll head back to Cusco, where you’ll arrive with plenty of time to enjoy your evening in the city.
